Floodplain Management

Floodplain management is a shared responsibility.  As Floodplain Administrator for the City, the Planning and Development Department follows Federal and State guidelines and administers the City's flood control ordinance.

It is the responsibility of the Planning and Development Department to:
- Adopt and enforce a floodplain management ordinance compliant with Federal/State laws
- Issue or deny development permits in compliance with the local Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance
- Inspect development and maintain records
- Make substantial damage determinations

Flood Insurance Rate Map Update

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, is engaged in a project to update the existing flood maps for the State. Some flood zones in DeKalb County will be changing. DeKalb County’s flood risk information has been revised, and updated flood hazard maps are now ready for review. It is important to the City to communicate the impacts and benefits of the project, how and where the risk will change/be affected at both the community and property level, what options the community and property owner can take to reduce that risk, and the benefits of those actions (e.g., more resilient; lower flood insurance rates).

View the new preliminary maps to see how your flood risk may have changed, learn how this may affect building and flood insurance requirements and find out what your options are by visiting the Georgia Flood Map Program page on the Georgia Department of Environmental Resources website: www.GeorgiaDFIRM.com, or by visiting the City's Interactive GIS Map: https://chamblee.maps.arcgis.com/.
